“I never knew URCC could be a family event!”-Patrick (the elem classmate) on our little trip to San Juan gym.
As soon as our passenger ship from Iloilo docked on the pier, my mom, my tito and tita whisked my cousins and I to San Juan stadium to watch my Richard’s fight.

It was one surprise that I really didn’t know how to react on because I don’t like the idea of my cousin wrestling or getting punched. But I also wanted to be there just in case the other guy hurt our Richie seriously. (I had this image of me waiting at the doorstep of the gym poised for action with deadly high-heeled sandals on hand.)
So we waited eagerly while watching nine matches preceding his. While the contenders beat the hell out of each other to the point where blood oozed out of their faces, we could not help but wonder, what are we going to do when Richie gets himself injured?
The guilty pleasure of watching “Smackdown” and “Raw” whenever I get the chance finally payed off because it help me understand some of the rules, although I needed to ask from Alvin and Arfie from time to time for further guidance. For one, the ref doesn’t count when one is on top and had the other pinned down. That one had me confused for the first two fights.
When it was Richie’s turn, everybody stood up (he was the
main event, after all). It seemed that everyone in our gallery was on the other guy’s side as they started to chant: “Erwin! Erwin! Erwin!”
But I was not intimidated. Despite warnings of my cousins, I screamed at the top of my lungs “RICHARD! RICHARD! RICHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRD!!!”
My cousins soon caught on and they also joined me with my cheering. Let me just say that when all their stamina, my cousins included, went down, mine were still up. And I was still screaming and raising my hand hard to the point that my tita started rubbing my back to tell me to relax.
But she doesn’t understand, there was no time to relax. It was time to cheer until the veins in our necks pop.
Auntie Happy, prayed the whole 20 minutes Richie was on the ring.

Maybe God heard our shouting and prayers because He gave him that extra strength to fight…

…and win.

Congratulations Richie! We are all so proud of you! Next time, I'll worry for the other guy. :)
***Iloilo post coming up, I hope. Hehehe.
