Years after the blockbuster hit, Pido Dida, and I’m still not impressed with Kris Aquino’s acting ability.

I started my tradition of watching at least three movies from the Metro Manila Film Fest every year with Mano Po.

It’s a film that explains how a Chinese family survives and remains rich in the Philippines. I understand the goal of the film. It wanted to assuage the hostility against the Chinese community in this country.

They tried to squeeze in as many Chinese traditions, beliefs, and superstitions as possible. It’s as if the audience participated in Chinese birthday, engagement, and funeral ceremony in one sitting.

It was funny when the actors would speak in Chinese because it’s extremely obvious that it was dubbed over, especially Kris’s. She probably couldn’t pull it off. The least the producers could do was to find someone with the same squeaky voice that Kris has.

Unfortunately, they also had to squeeze in politics in the movie. Nope, I’m not talking about snippets of Marcos, Aguino, or Ramos. I’m talking about Ara Mina’s character that closely resembles Rosebud’s life. I mean, she was a civilian agent, who negotiated with the triad, and she revealed in the senate that the PNP Chief is behind the drug trafficking in the country. She also fell in love with her handler (Richard Gomez) for crying out loud! How Rosebud can she get?

Also, there was a scene of Richard Gomez with a MAD (Mad Against Drugs) poster behind him. What was that about? Gomez, by the way, plays the part of a good policeman whose job is busting drug lords out.

The reason why I watch movies is because I want to escape the evening news filled with disgusting pigs disguising themselves as public servants. I don’t need to watch politicians disguising themselves as saviors in the big screen too.
